The ACRL Marketing Discussion group is a forum and network for academic librarians to discuss initiatives, strategies, and best practices in academic library marketing.

Word of Mouth Marketing (WOMM) is a powerful tool for communicating the value of your library to your community. But the very nature of WOMM means that it’s out of your control. How do you encourage and promote WOMM without alienating the very audience you want to reach? And how do you address negative word of mouth about your library?

Join us for a conversation about WOMM in the age of social media, when marketers must be aware of word of mouth on the web and still engage with patrons via in-person communication.

Eli Sullivan and Jason Michel (both of Miami University) will begin the conversation with a brief presentation on their use of a Twitter search API to engage with students at their campus about information needs and build a more positive understanding of the library. We’ll then continue to a discussion of WOMM via the web and more traditional modes of communication, all of which are essential for building a positive buzz around your library and the invaluable resources and services it provides to your community.
