Since its inception in 1969, the Coretta Scott King Book Award has grown from a small point of light on the publishing landscape to a brilliant star among the galaxy of prizes that celebrate the most notable works of literature for children and young adults. The award highlights the works of African American authors and illustrators, and has served as a vibrant example of the importance of books depicting African Americans. In this enlightening dialogue, publisher and author, Andrea Davis Pinkney, speaks with past and present award recipients who reflect on the Coretta Scott King Book Award’s history, impact, scope, and future ― and who share their behind-the-book recollections on the creation of their winning titles.
