This is a panel discussion about the challenges of being a manager and a person of color. The panel consists of managers from the 5 ethnic associations who have less than 5 years of managerial experience. The panelists are from different types of library systems and they all supervise professionals and paraprofessionals:

>> American Indian Library Association (AILA)
>> Asian Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA)
>> Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA)
>> Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA)
>> National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the
>> Spanish Speaking (REFORMA)

The following topics will be explored:
1. Challenges and obstacles of becoming a manager--the interview process
2. What to expect after you have been hired
3. Where do you get support
4. Roles you play-manager, parent, coach, etc.
5. Adapting to the audience –code switching, speaking a language other than English
