Supporting lifelong learning is a key component of the mission of school libraries. The national crisis of literacy achievement of African-American males is an extension of this mission, and one we believe the school library community must embrace. Research on best practice in the literacy instruction of Black male youth, including effective pedagogy, text selection, and community empowerment, must be part of the professional repertoire of school library professionals.
