Now Showing @ ALA: The Whole Gritty City Other Las Vegas Convention Center
N242
Description :

The Whole Gritty City is a 90-minute documentary that plunges viewers into the world of three New Orleans school marching bands. The film follows kids growing up in America's most musical city, and one of its most dangerous, as their band directors get them ready to perform in the Mardi Gras parades, and teach them to succeed and to survive. Navigating the urban minefield through moments of setback, loss, discovery, and triumph, these children and their adult leaders reveal the power and resilience of a culture.

This New Orleans marching band story is at the same time a unique portrayal of an American inner city. It highlights men with an open-eyed, deep commitment to the community they've grown up in and the children in their charge. Viewers who know first-hand the African American urban experience will find a celebration of the strength and insight of these men, and the potential and resilience of their students. Others will find a moving, empathetic portrayal of an unfamiliar world, and come to feel a stake in the struggles and triumphs of these children and their mentors.

In February 2014 the film aired nationally on CBS on "48 Hours Presents: THE WHOLE GRITTY CITY", a 2-hour special hosted by jazz great Wynton Marsalis.

Career Development Workshop: Getting a Library Job in a Foreign Country: How (and why) to do it and How to Thrive Once You Do Other Las Vegas Convention Center
Hall N - Placement Center
Description :

Ever dream of leaving the US for a library job in an exotic metropolis or on a sunny tropical isle, but were too bewildered by uncertainty to actually apply? Wondering what types of people get hired by foreign libraries and how to maximize your chances of getting an interview? Meet two American librarians currently working abroad: Kate Holvoet, Library and Learning Commons Supervisor at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi, UAE and Lara Phillips, Reader Services Librarian at the University of the South Pacific in Suva, Fiji. Lara and Kate will give you the scoop on what working for a foreign library is really like, how to decide if a foreign job is the right move for you and what you need to know about the search and application process to succeed. Even if you're not considering taking a job abroad, you will enjoy this peek at the unique challenges presented by university and library life in other countries.

Presenters: Lara Phillips and Kate Holvoet

Katherine Holvoet supervises the Learning Commons in the library at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. Kate has held several academic library positions during the course of her career, from State and Local Documents Librarian at Florida International University to International Documents Librarian/Head of Government Documents/Head of Online Services at the University of Utah. Thirteen years at the same institution and eleven years living in a condo with an insane Home Owner's Association board lead her to apply for her current position in the Middle East.

Lara Seven Phillips oversees the Pacific Special Collections at the University of the South Pacific in Suva, Fiji. During her more than two decades as a librarian she has worked in both public and academic libraries of all sizes, as well an NLS library for the visually impaired. A budget-related lay-off and lengthy job search in her home state of Washington led her to look overseas and accept the opportunity of a contract position with her current university.
