Why are some school libraries better supported than others? Working with a team of researchers, Ken Haycock has interviewed more than 200 administrators, politicians and lobbyists. Through examination of decisions taken in difficult financial times, and the behaviors of teacher-librarians and school administrators, six principles for persuasion have been validated. Evidence and messaging are not working when the support for school libraries continues to decline. Learn the principles, and many examples, to be successful in any situation.

From authors-in-residence programs to STEM support to literacy festivals, the libraries featured on this year’s tour have something for everyone! We’ll begin our tour with the Las Vegas Day School (PreK-8), the oldest independent school in Nevada, and then head over to Faith Lutheran Middle School and High School, which was recently named an Apple Distinguished School. Our final stop will be The Alexander Dawson School (PreK-8), which features a technologically-advanced project-based learning curricululm.

New and experienced program reviewers are encouraged to attend this session this session to learn about the CAEP program review process, the 2010 AASL Standards for Initial Preparation of School Librarians, report preparation and review, and appropriate assessments. Attendees will study a sample report and participate in a review exercise. Program report writers are welcome to attend. All programs submitting an initial report must now use the 2010 standards. Reviewers who have not attended training on the 2010 standards must attend this session in order to be assigned to a review of programs using those standards.

Donalyn Miller says she has yet to meet a child she couldn’t turn into a reader. Author of The Book Whisperer, Donalyn reflects on her journey to become a reading teacher and describes her unconventional approach to inspire and motivate middle school students to read 40 or more books a year. In her latest book, Reading in the Wild, Donalyn collects responses from 900 adult readers and uses this information to teach lifelong reading habits to her students. Donalyn has worked with upper elementary and middle school students and currently teaches fifth grade at O.A. Peterson Elementary in Forth Worth, Texas. Her articles about teaching and reading have appeared in publications such as The Reading Teacher, Educational Leadership and The Washington Post.
