Facilitating Teaching and Learning through the integration of Library Services and Course Management Exhibitor session Las Vegas Convention Center
S232
Description :

The changing ecosystem for scholarly communication drives libraries to look for new ways in which they can leverage their knowledge and expertise to better serve their communities and also to demonstrate value to their institutions. A tighter integration of library services with teaching and learning environments enables the library to be more visible to faculty and students, to optimize the use of the content it acquires and licenses, and to make informed decisions when developing its physical, digitized, and electronic collections.

The session will discuss the integration between course management systems, discovery systems, and library management systems. It will focus on cross-system workflows and optimal user experience for all stakeholders—faculty, students, and library staff. The work done by a Northwestern University Library team to integrate their Blackboard course management system and the Primo discovery system will be described.

Patron Driven Acquisition – Is it good for Video? Exhibitor session Las Vegas Convention Center
N236
Description :

Colleen Cleary (Library Resource Services Manager) from the Queensland University of Technology and Alison Bates (Collection Provision Manager) from La Trobe University, two of the earliest adopters of PDA for video globally and the authors of "Possible, inevitable or fait accompli? An analysis of streaming video acquisition, acceptance and use in higher education".
Cleary and Bates' presentation presents the findings from their 2-year study on “Patron Driven Acquisition” (PDA) as a model for the acquisition of online video. Today, PDA has become a standard model of acquisition in the eBook market, more effectively aligning spend with use and increased return on investment (ROI), yet remains a vastly under-utilized model of acquisition for online video.

QUT and La Trobe launched a research project in collaboration with Kanopy to pilot and explore various models for the PDA of video. In the session, Cleary and Bates will present the findings from that study, incorporating the rich user statistics and survey data and building upon a peer-reviewed research paper released this year.

The final part of the session will explore the type of metrics that can be relied on for assessing ROI across different resources (DVD, online video, ebook), and presents some fascinating results from their campus experiences.

Grow Forward: Professional Education Needs in the 21st Century Program Las Vegas Convention Center
S219
Description :

Twenty-first century libraries, archives, and museums (LAMs) face tremendous changes in how they select, acquire, preserve and provide access to content, especially born digital materials. Websites and social media, content management systems and online exhibits, digital preservation and forensics: all these must-have features are accelerating the pace of change. LAM professionals need to acquire twenty-first century skill-sets to respond to these changes, yet many of our newest graduates report that they cannot find jobs, in some cases because they lack traditional skills. In this session, we will look at educational expectations and opportunities for new and seasoned professionals, including certification, credentialing, badging, and portfolios and how professionals and employers can be confident that a resume accurately reflects real-world skills. We will review the ways that traditional GLAM education is adapting to new demands and discuss additional areas in which improvement is needed.
