RED MADNESS How a Medical Mystery Changed What We Eat

One hundred years ago, a mysterious disease called pellagra spread across the American South. No one knew what caused it or how to treat it. Millions of men, women, and children were left weak, disfigured, insane and in some cases, dead. Many were also left to worry -- would they be pellagra's next victims?

Author Gail Jarrow closely tracks this devastating disease using vivid photographs and actual cases, and she reveals the story of the doctors, researchers, and public health officials who struggled to stop the epidemic. STARRED REVIEWS -- School Library Journal and Kirkus Reviews!

Branded by the Pink Triangle
Before the rise of the Nazi party, Germany, especially Berlin, was one of the most tolerant places for homosexuals in the world. But that all changed when the Nazis came to power. When the concentration camps were built, homosexuals were imprisoned along with Jews and the pink triangle sewn onto prison uniforms became the symbol of the persecution of homosexuals. A mix of historical research, first-person accounts and individual stories brings this time to life for young readers. Stories of bravery, friendship and the perseverance of the human spirit will educate and inspire.

The Amelia Bloomer Project (FTF/SRRT) and the Rainbow Project (SRRT/GLBTRT) are collaborating for the first on an exciting author panel. Two authors with works on the Amelia Bloomer Project list will speak: William Klaber, author of The Rebellion of Miss Lucy Ann Lobdell, and Rita Williams-Garcia, author of P.S. Be Eleven and One Crazy Summer, from the 2014 and 2011 lists respectively. The powerful way these authors treat social injustices stemming from racial and gender discrimination and gender non-conformity in their writing suggest they will be compelling speakers.

Tim Federle is the author of Better Late than Never, a Stonewall Honor book, and it's sequel Five, Six, Seven Nate! Sara Farizan is the author of If You Could Be Mine, which recently won a Lambda Literary Award, as well as the upcoming Tell Me Again How a Crush Should Feel.
