CANCELLED The Pros and Cons of Coming in 3rd Place Program Las Vegas Convention Center
S224
Description :

While adults have places that are their "third place," a home away from home, few places in the community offer youth the same option. The school library can and should act as a third place where students find a place to be themselves away from home and the constraints of the classroom. This presentation offers suggestions on how to advocate for school libraries and make the most of what you have to encourage others to invest in the library, including promoting resources (flaunt what you've got), giving students "ownership" in the library and giving potential investors complete communications.

CANCELLED Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are not just for after school! Program Las Vegas Convention Center
N232
Description :

We have a crisis of engagement - students feel burdened by standardized tests that drive the teaching, that many check out once. They don’t understand the relevance of the curriculum, and can’t wait to go home to their computers. In this session attendees will learn how to increase student motivation by integrating social media into curriculum, to look beyond the social media tools themselves to the underlying core concepts, and to use these as authentic assessments, and to advocate for the school library as the place where these 21st century skills can be taught in collaboration with classroom teachers.
