Speaking About 'The Speaker' Program Las Vegas Convention Center

Description :

In 1977, ALA released “The Speaker,” a film that led to unprecedented rancor, division, and discussion within the association. Controversy over the film dominated the 1977 Annual Conference in Detroit, and nearly 40 years later, strong opinions remain about the process and the end product. You can read about the controversy in articles from American Libraries July/August 1977 issue: http://www.americanlibrariesmagazine.org/sites/americanlibrariesmagazine....

We invite you to attend one of two screenings of the 42-minute film in advance [either online at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojFYx52X-Ys or as part of the of the “Now Showing @ ALA” series (http://ala14.ala.org/node/14032)] and join us for this panel discussion of the film and the controversy, followed by an audience discussion.

Speakers: Robert Wedgeworth, past ALA Executive Director; Beverly Lynch, UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies; Marc McCallon, Abilene Christian University. Moderator: Julius C. Jefferson, Jr.
