Why are some school libraries better supported than others? Working with a team of researchers, Ken Haycock has interviewed more than 200 administrators, politicians and lobbyists. Through examination of decisions taken in difficult financial times, and the behaviors of teacher-librarians and school administrators, six principles for persuasion have been validated. Evidence and messaging are not working when the support for school libraries continues to decline. Learn the principles, and many examples, to be successful in any situation.

Meaningful Gamification is the use of game design elements to help someone find meaning in a real-world setting. It is focused on using concepts like play, reflection, and engagement instead of rewards to engage users. In this workshop, Dr. Scott Nicholson, director of the Because Play Matters game lab from the iSchool at Syracuse University, will lead attendees through the process of developing library campaigns around reward-based gamification and meaningful gamification for a program, service, or other need. Attendees should come prepared with some aspect of a library that they would like to motivate patrons to engage with through game elements.

Come learn the transformative power of reframing failure, the true meaning of "yes, and" and the kinds of listening that change lives. In this session, we'll use applied improvisation to go from passive-aggressive to assertive, from blame to "I'm game." Instead of hearing "It's not my job!" you’ll start hearing "How do we do it?"

Libraries are increasingly needing to manage locally-produced media content in born-digital form. This ranges from a university's public relations videos, to recordings of sporting events, to student thesis projects, to oral histories, to local television and radio programming. This workshop aims to help libraries understand how to understand ingesting and managing this type of content. This ranges from offering advice to content contributors (on preferred file formats, wrappers, and metadata), to file structures and metadata for maintaining a collection, to variety of methods for providing access, to concerns about ensuring the longevity and integrity of these works.
